Hill walking
There are fabulous opportunities for walking near Oak Cottage. The Howgill Fells can be accessed directly from the cottage without the need to use a car. The Howgills offer well graded hill walking over easy terrain, the exception being Cautley Spout which offers a sustained steep ascent at the side of a waterfall, this leads to easier ground giving access to the highest point of the Howgills (The Calf 676m). Walkers will find these fells have good tracks and very few people. Wild Boar Fell dominates the area with its classic Yorkshire Dale features. The routes up it vary. The path overlooking the Mallerstang Valley being the most dramatic.

The rivers Eden and Belah are near Kirkby Stephen for which permits are available locally from Kirkby Stephen and District Angling Association. The Lake District is within easy driving distance where a wealth of fishing in rivers and lakes is available. Tebay Anglers offer day permits to fish stretches of the Lune. Bessy Beck Trout Fishery is at Newbiggin-on-Lune.

Riverside Golf Club in Ravenstonedale is a unique 18 hole, 9 green, small course specialising in par-3 short holes with character 70-140 yard fairways. The course is ideal for first time golfers, young and old, male and female. It is perfect for practising short game and is considered by many local golfers to involve a high degree of difficulty. It offers an hour or two of pleasant golf to members and visitors alike. Riverside is a picturesque course in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It enjoys an idyllic setting, nestling under the Howgill fells in the village of Ravenstonedale. It is worth the modest fee just to walk the course.
